Gobichettipalayam (often simply called Gobi) is a semi-rural community in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu state, India. Major part of present Gobichettipalayam was previously known as Verapandi Gramam, and more quondam documents and records still use that name. Gobichettipalayam boasts some famous tourist spots like Kodivery dam and Gunderi Pallam Dam near the periphery of forests. This place is also famous for religious attractions like Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, Pachaimalai Balamurugan Hill Temple and Pavalamalai Muthu Kumaraswamy Hill Temple. Because of the scenic beauty and cultural richness, outdoor shooting of the film industry thrives in this area.
Because of the cultural and religious importance, people prefer Gobi for marriages of their kith and kin. People as far as from Delhi with roots in Tamilnadu, conduct their marriage rituals here. That paved the way for a strong Cook's association (Samayal Kalaignar Sangam).

At coordinates 11.46° N 77.43° E, Gobichettipalayam is about 40 km from District headquarters Erode and 85 km from Coimbatore. It is warm and humid for most of the year. The surrounding water logged paddy fields contribute to the high humidity levels.
Demographics
Gobichettipalayam is an agrarian constituency situated in the belt of Keezhbhavani ayacuts. As of 2001 India census,[1] Gobichettipalayam had a population of 55,150. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Gobichettipalayam has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 68%. In Gobichettipalayam, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age. The electorate of the constituency has been frequently faced with problems over sharing water between the new and old ayacut areas, which has remained an unresolved issue over the years despite court rulings and promises by various governments. There are six Assembly segments in this constituency. Sathyamangalam, Bhavanisagar, Gobichettipalayam, Andhiyur, Perunthurai and Bhavani. This is also one of the constituencies where the women voters outnumber men. Out of the total electorate of 10,51,947 voters, 5,31,007 are women, surpassing 5,20,940 men.

The economy of Gobichettipalayam centers on rice paddies, sugarcane, banana,rice,tobacco and turmeric. There are also growing numbers of spinning mills to support the weaving industry developing in the region.

The town is home to the Pariyur Kondathu Kaliamman Temple, a 5-acre (20,000 m²) Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Kaliamman (an incarnation of Kali). The town is known for its lush green spectacular paddy fields that extend to the horizon in 360 degrees. Gobi is strikingly different from other perky towns like nearby Erode. The Nadars, Goundars, Brahmins ,Mudaliars, chettiars form a majority of Gobi.

P.S.Muthuvelappa Gounder - Full Name is Pudupalayam Senniyappa Gounder Muthuvelappa Gounder. He is the Champion behind the construction of this day Pariyur Kaliamman Temple. His statues can be seen on a pillar right to the side of the Singam (Simhavahana) with folded hands on a standing posture. His statue could also be found in the main Gopuram above Sanctum Sanctorium on the third level. He was born around 1910's and expired around 1960's after living a boastful 56 years. He is the main brain behind Gobichettipalayam Co-operative Urban Bank and was its President for considerable time. He is a freedom fighter and a congress leader who had direct communication with Mahatma Gandhi.
K.S.Ramaswamy - Kugalur Subbanna Gounder Ramasamy was born on Feb 21 1921 as the only of son of 'Kugalur Gandhi' Freedom fighter K K Subbanna Gounder. He was a freedom fighter from college days and an advocate graduated from Loyola College, Madras and Trichy Law College. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1956 and later was an MP in Rajya Sabha. He won the infamous 1977 elections from Gobichettipalayam consitituency. He retired from public life in 1980. Famous visit by then Chief Minister M G Ramachandran to lure him back to politics failed. Finally, KSR expired at his Kugalur home on 3rd December 2005. Boastful is his clean hand during his 25 odd years stay as an MP and his spiritual contributions like 3rd Spiritual Conference of OM SHAKTHI in Gobichettipalayam
